Precision control of opto-piezoelectric-thermo-elastic structronic shell systems

Active piezoelectric materials are widely used in modern intelligent structronic (structural + electronic) systems, precision mechatronic systems and micro electromechanical systems. This talk focuses on 1) multi field opto thermoelectromechanical responses of distributed piezoelectric and photostrictive structronic systems and 2) distributed sensing and control of flexible continua using distributed transducers. Generic distributed sensing and control theories based on a double curvature flexible shell are presented first. Applications of the generic theories to common geometries and components, e.g., plates, beams, cylindrical shells, conical shells, paraboloidal shells, etc., are demonstrated. Furthermore, extensions of the fundamental theories to nonlinear thermo-piezoelectric systems, orthogonal sensors/actuators, laminated composites, pyroelectric and thermo-piezoelectric sensing/control, photodeformation and actuation, etc. are discussed. Examples and applications, e.g., distributed control mechanisms and designs, self sensing orthogonal actuators, piezoelectric/thermoelastic responses and distributed vibration control, opto mechanical actuators, etc. are also presented.
